06/24/2011 Searcy County Resident Killed In Logging Accident Near Fort Douglas |

Bill Turney, age 70 of Marshall in Searcy County was killed by a falling tree while logging in the Ozark National Forest near Fort Douglas. The Sheriff's Office received a call at approximately 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 23 of the accident. Deputies responded along with members of Rural Fire District # 3 to the scene. The investigation indicates that Turney cut a large tree which hit a different tree while falling, causing the base of the tree to swing around and strike him in the back. Witnesses state that they last saw Turney at approximately 1:00 p.m. on a lunch break. He was prounounced dead at the scene. The U.S. Forest Service is assisting in the investigation. |
